Jaco is one of the best places to learn to surf. The waves are considered to have a very consistent break, so they are great for learning. If you are more experienced, you can always try out Hermosa Beach which is 15 minutes away and has world-class surfing. Long boards are available for beginning surfers.

Motorcycles
If you want to see Costa Rica or its trails on your own, renting your own bike is the way to go. They have Yamaha 125´s (4-stroke) for those without a motorcycle driver´s license, and the Honda XR 600 (4-stroke) for those with a solid background in riding (and with a motorcycle license obviously). They, of course, provide all your equipment: helmets, goggles and gloves.

We use a company in Hermosa Beach which is about 5 minutes south of Jaco by taxi. They maintain the highest horse care standards and are one of only 3 fully licensed and insured operations in the Jaco area. Following are two of the tours they offer:
This 2 1/2 hour tour takes you to a secret waterfall. Ride along the deserted farm tracks where we will point out all that nature provides. Arrive at the waterfall to chilled fruit drinks. Immerse yourself in the gentle cascades. Eat fresh local fruits while we give you a skin treatment you will never forget. Then amble back refreshed and relaxed to base.
Or you can ride along the stunning Hermosa Beach track situated parallel to the beautiful beach of Hermosa. Watch the surfers taking on the waves. Don’t forget to look out for the leaping manta rays and dolphins that frequent the waters off the pacific coast or the Cayman crocodiles that live in the nearby waterholes.

Crocodile Tour

Scuba Diving/Snorkeling in Herredura Bay

The ocean is the last great frontier and diving is the way to explore it by discovering its wonders and getting in touch with its inhabitants. Herradura Divers, dive center, using PADI training programs, wants to spread the knowledge of the underwater world. Our dive settings are located in the Herradura Bay and surrounding areas, a region characterized by large volcanic rock formations. Locations are generally just a 15-minute boat ride from shore. While swimming between rocks covered in sea fans, we will see angel and butterfly fish, puffers, snappers and schools of grunts, surgeons and jacks as well as colored parrot fish, turtles, white tip sharks, eagle and sting rays, lobsters and different kinds of eels. Golfing at Los Suenos
There is beautiful 18-hole course just 10 minutes from Jaco. It’s a new development that is growing with high-end homes and amenities. Front desk can call for current greens fees.
Sea Kayaking
This is a great tri-fun for the whole family. You can either paddle out on an 8-person outrigger canoe or in single or double kayaks. You will paddle to an island where you will be able to snorkel (weather provided). They provide bottled water and fresh fruit. These are either morning or afternoon trips. White Water Rafting

Near Quepos, there are several rivers for white water rafting. Elder and younger guests, or anyone preferring a nature float, can choose the Class II Rio Parrita, full of exotic animal species. In the middle is the Class III Rio Savegre; a perfect river for those looking for an intermediate experience.
Half or full days are offered on most rivers. Transportation is best if you have your own car and can drive to Quepos. If not, they will pick up larger parties. There are also trips out of San Jose on the Pacqure River, towards the Caribbean coast. These may involve an overnight in San Jose, so please let us know if you are interested in this information.

Deep Sea Fishing

The central Pacific coast offers some of the best sportfishing in Costa Rica. Marlin are caught throughout the year, predominantly between the months of January through September. Sailfish run between 80 to 200 lbs, you can expect to see many free jumpers and excessive amounts of sailfish during the months of December through May. Jungle River Cruise
Famous for its large American Crocodiles, the Tarcoles River forms the Northern border of Carara Biological Reserve on the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The Tarcoles is full of Crocodiles, Scarlet Macaws, Jesus Christ Lizards, and over 120 species of birds. Rainforest Aerial Tram
Just 10 minutes from the center of Jaco is a ski-lift type operation to experience the rain forest as a bird does. Observe the most complex ecosystem on Earth from above the trees with a trip on the aerial tram. Price includes entrance fee, ride on the gondola and naturalist bi-lingual guide to explain the beautiful features of the rainforest. Ride is only about 30 minutes but there are natural areas around the aerial tram to explore on foot.

This is a national park located about 20 minutes from Jaco. It is a very large biological preserve where you can look for all types of birds, wildlife and plant life. It is a very interesting tour where you can hike and take in some knowledge of the Costa Rican rainforest and wilderness.
Jardin Pura Vida, Botanical Gardens
About 45 minutes from Jaco, up at the top of a beautiful mountain, sits 40 acres of well manicured botanical gardens and wild birds (you can even feed the Toucans!) At Jardin Pura Vida you meander along paved walkways planted with over 1,000,000 flowering plants, see Costa Rica’s tallest waterfall and take in the spectacular views of the Pacific and surrounding mountains. Your sure to see Scarlet Macaws and Toucans and may see the family of White Faced Monkeys that live in the area. If you have your own car, that’s a great way to get there. Hike to a Waterfall
Just about 30 minutes north of Jaco is some private land where you can hike to a waterfall and take a swim in the pools. The hike is steep in areas, but if you go slowly, almost any ability hiker can do it. The round trip may take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending upon your speed. But make sure you take LOTS of water. The cost is about $20 per person, just to pay the man who owns the land. You will need a car to drive there, or a taxi can wait for you while you hike.
